Test environment Agroforestry
Agroforestry is about creating sustainable farming systems by integrating perennial plants such as shrubs and trees into the agricultural landscape, or by establishing farms in existing forest environments. The aim is to benefit natural ecosystems while striving for higher productivity and profitability.
About the project
At Angereds Gård in Gothenburg, a test environment is currently being built to implement agroforestry techniques in the agricultural and forest landscapes. The test environment consists of two parts: one is an alley cropping plot where trees and shrubs are planted together with agricultural crops, and the other a forest farm where mushrooms and berries are grown in symbiosis with nature.
This test environment will demonstrate how alley cropping and forest farms can be used to create profitable and sustainable farming systems. That is why we will monitor soil quality, biodiversity, carbon sequestration, water and nutrient retention and compare the results with typical monoculture crops.
The aim is to inspire more people to use agroforestry techniques in agriculture and forestry. To achieve this, the staff responsible for the test environment will produce manuals on how to use these methods, as well as calculations on time requirements and profitability. This will help businesses speed up the implementation of the technology. The test environment will also provide training for our adult education program in agroforestry.
