LoRaWan test environment – sensor technology in agriculture
A test environment for sensors with LoRaWan connectivity is currently being set up at Region Västra Götaland's natural resource management schools. LoRaWan is a wireless data transmission technology, just like WiFi, 3G and 4G, but with the unique ability to transmit signals very far with extremely low energy consumption.
About the project
Using sensor technology and collecting data is nothing new, but it is rare in the natural resources sector. The test environment is therefore being built to create a place to test the technology in new environments.
Initially, sensors will be installed to measure precipitation, humidity and temperature in order to obtain data on the exact climate of the location. But the long-term plan is to test sensors that measure much more than that. For example, sensors can be used to measure nutrient levels in the soil, animal behavior and movements, ammonia and CO2 in animal sheds, or to monitor forest lands or animal enclosures.
The hope is that in the long term, the test environment will help the digitalization of the green industry and create a smart natural resource management with the help of sensor technologies. The test environment will not only create a place for testing the technology in the field of natural resource management, it will also act as a demonstration site where stakeholders can observe and be inspired by new ways of collecting data to make life easier.
