Vanessa Bell, Quebec, Kanada

Vanessa Bell är poet, artist, konstnär, curator och litterär aktivist. Hon är också chef för poesiavdelningen på Éditions du Quartz. Hon är författare till två böcker, en antologi om kvinnlig poesi i Quebec och en essä om kallvattensimning. Hennes livliga, skarpa skrivande och konstnärliga engagemang har gett henne ett antal stipendier och utmärkelser i Quebec och utomlands. I över femton är har hon medverkat i en rad tidningar, festivaler och medier där hon diskuterar litteratur. Under Nicole Brossards mentorskap är Vanessa Bell den första fransktalande kanadensaren som får stöd av Writers´ Trust of Canadas Rising Starsprogram.

Under sin vistelse kommer hon att arbeta med att färdigställa sin femte bok, en första  roman. Vanessa bell säger att :

« Den här boken har varit under förberedelse i fyra år nu. Att skriva den representerar en kolossal intellektuell investering, men framför allt en känslomässig sådan, eftersom dess huvudämne är en serie barnmord. Först publicerades berättelsen som en novell 2020, men den har aldrig upphört att fascinera mig. Dessa karaktärer som bor på en fiktiv ö med Björnön på Svalbard som föebild fortsatte att diktera sin historia för mig efter publiceringen. Sedan dess har jag levt med den här kvinnan, hennes man och deras fem barn i denna berättelse om kärlek, nordiskhet, simning, äventyr och död. «

Vanessa Bell is a poet, performer, artist, curator and literary activist. She is also director of the poetry collection at Éditions du Quartz. She is the author of two collections, an anthology on women's poetry in Québec, and an essay on cold water swimming. Her vivid, sharp writing and artistic commitment have earned her a number of grants and awards in Québec and abroad. For over fifteen years, she has contributed to a number of magazines, festivals and media where she discusses literature. Under the mentorship of Nicole Brossard, Vanessa Bell is the first French-speaking Canadian to be supported by the Writers' Trust of Canada's Rising Stars program.

During her residency, she will be working on finalizing her fifth book, a first novel. Vanessa Bell says that: “This book has been in preparation for four years now. Writing it represents a colossal intellectual investment, but above all an emotional one, as its main subject is a series of infanticides.

First published as a short story in 2020, it has never ceased to occupy me. These characters, living on a fictional island modelled on Bear Island in Svalbard, continued to dictate their story to me after publication. Since then, I've been living with this woman, her husband and their five children in this story of love, northernness, swimming, adventure and death.”
