Frances Cannon, Edinburgh, Skottland

Frances Cannon är Mellon Science and Nature Writing Fellow vid Kenyon College 2023-2025. Hon är en tvärvetenskaplig författare, utbildare, redaktör och konstnär vars arbete kreativt kombinerar prosa och poesi med bildkonst till hybridformer som serier, grafiska texter och illustrerade manuskript. Hennes intressen för vetenskapligt skrivande inkluderar botanik, mykologi, klimatkrisen, medicin och livsmedelssystem.

Frances Cannon är författare och illustratör till flera böcker: Walter Benjamin: Reimagined (MIT Press), The highs and lows of Shapeshift Ma and Big-Little Frank (Goold Wake Press), Tropicalia (Vagabond press) Sagittaria (Bottlecap press), Predator/Play (Ethel Zine) och Fling Diction (Green Writers Press). Cannon har tidigare undervisat vid Vermont Commons School, Burlingtons City Arts och University of Iowa.

Frances Cannons nuvarande projekt är en grafisk biografi om Isobel Wylie Hutchison, en skotsk kvinnlig upptäcktsresande, romanförfattare, poet och botaniker från sent 1800-tal och tidigt 1900-tal. Boken uppmärksammar betydande kulturell och historisk information om Hutchison, särskilt hennes ursprung i Storbritannien och hennes vilda soloäventyr till Island, Grönland, Alaska och vidare. Cannons forskning går ut på att fördjupa sig i Hutchisons arkiv och hennes kreativa process involverar både skrivande och akvarellmålning.

Frances Cannon is the Mellon Science and Nature Writing Fellow at Kenyon College, 2023 - 2025. She is an interdisciplinary writer, educator, editor, and artist whose work creatively combines prose and poetry with visual art into hybrid forms such as comics, graphic texts, and illustrated manuscripts. Her interests in science writing include botany, mycology, the climate crisis, medicine, and food systems. 

Frances Cannon is the author and illustrator of several books: Walter Benjamin: Reimagined, MIT Press, The Highs and Lows of Shapeshift Ma and Big-Little Frank, Gold Wake Press, Tropicalia, Vagabond Press, Sagittaria, Bottlecap Press, Predator/Play, Ethel Zine, and Fling Diction, with Green Writers Press. Cannon has previously taught at the Vermont College of Fine Arts, Champlain College, the Vermont Commons School, Burlington City Arts, and the University of Iowa.

Frances Cannons current project is a graphic biography of Isobel Wylie Hutchison, a late 19^th and early 20^th century Scottish female explorer, novelist, poet, and botanist. This book would draw upon significant cultural and historical information about Hutchison, specifically her origins in the UK and her wild solo adventures to Iceland, Greenland, Alaska, and beyond.

Cannons research involves immersing herself in Hutchisons archive, and her creative process involves writing and watercolor painting.
