David Hartley, Manchester, Storbritannien

David Hartley är författare och ägnar sig åt performance inom litteratur. Han är från Manchester i Storbritannien. Han har en doktorsexamen i kreativt skrivande från Universitet i Manchester och hans novellsamling Fauna (Fly on the Wall Press) med djurtema nominerades till Edge Hill-priset. Han har varit Artist in residence i Tartu, Estland för projektet Bring your own Utopia vid Prima Vista International Literature Festival 2024.

Tillsammans med konstnären Henri Hütt skapade han The Forest of Ink & Skin, en uppslukande berättarföreställning om tatueringar, estnisk folklore och skogsbruk.
Hans korta berättelser har presenterats i Ambit, Black Static, The Gasting och British Fantasy Society, Horizons med flera och sommaren 2024 utformade han och var värd för det två dagar långa Spoken word-evenemanget The Embassy of Utopia för biblioteksfestivalen i Manchester.

På Stationen i Svenshögen kommer han att arbeta med sin märkliga, tidsglidande, skönlitterära novella The City of Good Thoughts inspirerad av hans utforskningar av Tartus utmarker och gränsområden i Estland. Verket kommer att kombinera narrativa undersökningar av eko-poetik och neuroquerness för att berätta om bortkoppling och missförstånd i Europa efter Brexit.
Han siktar också på att iscensätta ytterligare en unik och engagerande berättarföreställning under sin stipendievistelse på Stationen i Svenshögen. Håll utkik här för en uppdatering:

David Hartley is a writer and performer of short fiction from Manchester, UK. He holds a PhD in Creative Writing from The University of Manchester, and his animal-themed short story collection Fauna (Fly on the Wall Press) was longlisted for the Edge Hill Prize. He was writer-in-residence in Tartu, Estonia for the ‘Bring Your Own Utopia’ project at the 2024 Prima Vista International Literature Festival.

Working with artist Henri Hütt, he created The Forest of Ink & Skin, an immersive, durational storytelling performance about tattoos, Estonian folklore, and forestry. His short fiction has featured in Ambit, Black Static, The Ghastling, and British Fantasy Society, Horizons among many others, and in the summer of 2024 he devised and hosted the two-day spoken word event ‘The Embassy of Utopia’ for the Festival of Libraries in Manchester.

At Stationen i Svenshögen he will work on his weird fiction timeslip novella, The City of Good Thoughts, inspired by his explorations of the edgelands and border spaces of Tartu in Estonia. The work will combine narrative explorations of ecopoetics and neuroqueerness to tell a tale of disconnection and miscommunication in post-Brexit Europe. He also aims to stage another unique & immersive storytelling performance within Stationen during his residency.
